It really depends on the person. Some people can do it right away, while it can take weeks, months, and even years for others.
There is a distinction between having sporadic astral projections and being able to project consistently, on a regular basis. Being able to project consistently requires one to develop the skills of falling asleep in a relaxed and concentrated state. This can time and a lot of effort to develop. However, in my opinion, it's better to build this up so that you can rely on the astral as a source for gaining knowledge and experiences that aren't available in the physical world.

I guess there are a couple of notions of time: time in terms of how long it takes us to first astral project and how long it actually takes us to astral project when we do a practice.
Like Gabrielle said, the time it takes until we have an astral experience can vary. But it depends highly upon individual efforts. Many "try" but their efforts aren't strong (some days they just don't practice, they don't do proper preparations, they quickly become discouraged so stop putting in strong efforts, etc.) and consequently it may take them a very long time to succeed. By putting in strong efforts, though, many are able to project within much less time. It is often the case that when we are really doing our best, that spiritual beings help us to have an experience as encouragement.
Also, even after a first experience, it takes continuous effort to project consistently instead of sporadically.
As for how long it takes in a regular attempt in order to project, that also can vary. Astral projection involves us falling asleep with our mind concentrated on something - we can be concentrated on our heart beats, a location we are visualizing and wish to project to, a mantra, or even the images of a dream - this is what we would think about when trying.
If we a relaxed enough and maintain the concentration then we astral project once our physical body falls asleep. This could range from a couple of minutes to an hour or more - it depends on lots of factors.
If you are interested, there is a free astral travel course offered here on this site.
I hope this helps.
Happy astral!
