Concentration has to be exercised in nearly the same way as lifting weights. When any thought pulls you away from concentration, you have to pull back, and do this over and over, and in this way your concentration is gradually built up like a muscle. Visualization is similar, in that it takes struggle to gradually develop it, but visualization is a deliberate construction (that should be practiced on it's own,) as opposed to just letting the imagination run amok while reading a novel.
If you've already taken the course and/or read the book, just practice the concentration and visualization practices given (and of course, if you haven't, I would suggest that you take the course!) The only way to build up these abilities is through consistent struggle and exercise.
Good luck!

With visualization, it may be best to focus on visualizing real places and things. In the Astral Travel and Dreams course, there are some visualization techniques given that are effective in developing this ability.
It's great that you would like to develop this ability, as well as concentration. Visualization can be used in astral practices and you can actually project to a place using it. You can also use visualization to investigate mysteries, such as the heart, which has a spiritual significance. A technique is given for this as well.
With regard to reading and concentration, I can see why you would think it helps increase concentration. I have explored this, as well. What I notice, is that often I become passive and/or fascinated by what I am reading (even if it is non-fiction). So, I am not really actively concentrating. It is similar when I watch tv. VM Samael talks about this problem with reading in the forewords of some of the e-books on here, such as in his book Revolutionary Psychology. If you are interested, he presents a way to read consciously (page 4 of that book).
