Hi everyone,

I have noticed a few comments here and there about eating particular foods / diet for spiritual growth. What works for you? Is there anything significant you changed in your diet that benefited you greatly? Also, do you take any supplements you could recomend?

However, I think we should learn to listen to the inner voice and not rely on other’s opinions.

For example, if you ask me, I recommend you eat…a lot! :-)

Hi Ella, As Suave mentioned there is alot of talk about this already, as many people have already linked a healthy diet with a healthy spirit.
Basically from my own standpoint, I just try to eat healthy. I try for organics when Im able to and avoid buying anything that doesn't have a sustainable system behind it.
From a more spiritual standpoint, Master's have said to try to avoid the suffering of others (even those you eat!), so delicacies, like Foie Gras, or Shark Fin soup, are not on my menu. I don't eat alot of red meat, but usually take it twice a week and have fish every other day or so.
As we progress with the inner work here, I came to see how pork affected my practices, awareness, and dulled my sensitivity of things un-seen. So I stopped taking it as well. Not a huge life changing decision, but it does make for interesting conversation at pot lucks!

Supplements? Nope, but I do use Grapefruit seed extract when I feel like Im coming down with something. Its wicked powerful stuff!

Heh... pigs could pose a bit of a problem, huh? 3-5 days of the week, I
usually end up eating pig through some means, either as pork or much
more often as ham.

And the worst part? The second I try to say anything about this to
my parents, who buy 99% of the food at our house, I am going to be
laughed at right in my face and disregarded.

 

... so, peanut butter and jelly don't happen to have "dark, lustful
energies", do they? Because I'm going to have a hard time finding other
lunch food at this rate...

lol Daniel. Come on, you can find plenty more than PB&J. Cheese, turkey slices, chicken slices, etc. Tell your parents that pork, ham, etc.. are too fatty and salty and you want to eat healthier. Use your imagination and beat em with logic.

Even if you're stuck eating PB&J everyday, it's better than eating ham everyday. lol

*shrug* sliced ham is surprisingly lean meat, but at least you're right about it being salty. I have been eating healthier (nutritionally, anyway) and working out regularly in the past year or so, so there may be a bit of a "what are you complaining about?" response from them. I dunno... I guess I'll just have to do some actual research for once on what to avoid. This isn't a bad start, though.

Note on Cheese:

Cheese may have enzymes from pork too.

I just noticed recently that string cheese was a problem for me. I was using Kroeger brand string cheese as a snack and began to notice it was having similar effects of pork. On reseaching it I found out that the enzymes used to make the cheese were from pork. Not sure about other brands or types of cheese, but it may be something to pay attention to, if anyone is having "symptoms".

I usually buy the non-pork sausages, not realising that the 'natural casing' probably comes from intestine of pigs.

On the topic of gelatine, I have a packet of it in my cupboard, and it says it's from beef, so luckily you can get an alternative to pork gelatine, but it would be hard to know the difference in something like lollies when it doesn't say on the packet where the gelatine is from.

You can get 'vegetarian' cheese, which is more expensive, it uses vegetarian rennet.

I was just wondering if you have a particular favorite kind or brand of cheese (from vegetarian rennet). To me it's worth the expense :)
