There are so many ways to be inspired and gain spiritual strength, and one of them is through movies that carry an esoteric message and teach about spiritual progress, so I wanted to share some.

One of the most moving spiritual films I have seen was "The Passion of Joan of Arc" by Carl Dreyer, a 1999 restored version of a silent film from the 1920s. The original was thought to be lost but then years later, miraculously rediscovered. The version of it available now has a soundtrack that plays with the movie, music called "Voices of light". The entire film is heartbreaking and deeply moving, but that doesn't really express how powerful it is.

I have found that the video talks by the Master Belzebuub on his website can leave me with that same feeling that you are watching something very rare and profound, so special that it is calling on you the viewer to do something about it. I feel that with the talk on "Finding the Truth Today" [http://www.belzebuub.com/aweekendmeeting2008]

What do others think about this? Are there movies so profound that they have left you feeling actually different after you have watched them?

Hi Noah,

I recently saw a movie, that left me a bit changed and motivated, though I wouldn't really recommend others to see it. It's called "Wanted" and is a quite violent movie about a secret society of assassins, whose victims are picked by a "loom of destiny".

What I liked about the movie was the general story. The main character is some guy with some crappy job. He never knew his father, he is weak and suffers from anxiety attacks. He is saved by a member of this secret society, who takes him in and trains him. I won't tell more of the story, in case somebody wants to see the movie.
It is a classical story of awakening, finding your own real identity and place in the world, while learning of a secret part of life, that until now has remained hidden from you.
I really liked the movie. After he has learned the truth about the world he lives in, he sees his surroundings very differently. Regular people, living their regular lives, it seems so vain, when there is so much more going on "behind the scenes".

The movie has been called a mix between "The Matrix" and "Fight Club", so it is pretty violent. But if you look past the violence and obvious Hollywood-showing-off-techniques, then you might be inspired by this movie.

Other movies, that really makes an impact on me, are often related to Buddhism. Movies like "Little Buddha", "Samsara", "Kundun" and BBC's documentary "The Life of Buddha" all make me reflect on the way, I lead my life, all make me think about what I can do better.

Hi Noah, Christian and all,

Just beginning to explore some of the more esoteric movies, so haven't seen very many yet. I am going to look up The Passion of Joan of Arc. That sounds really good. Master Belzebuub's videos are such a gift! How wonderful it is to have them as inspiration and guidance. One thing that I noticed immediately when I found gnosticweb is that here was a group of people who really seem to resonate with many of the same movies that have touched me deeply. Like the Matrix (being stuck inside the "matrix" and waking up, "unfortunately no one can really be told what the matrix is...they have to experience it for themselves" and the Lord of the Rings (this epic tortuous, seemingly hopeless journey of a courageous little hobbit in his effort to destroy evil) and others. So I'm wondering if it goes the other way too? There are a couple that came to mind that I really like and I'm wondering if others do too.

"Phenomenon" is about a regular guy that suddenly begins to experience paranormal senses, and how that affects his life and relationships. What I love about it is the way it shows how excruciating it can be when someone begins to change from within and the painful struggle to communicate, evolve and stay connected to, or perhaps to just let go of the old relationships. The message is that love is what is really important through it all. It's very beautiful - the message, the cinematography and the music. Being from California orginally, those big ole Oak trees and rolling hills really make me homesick.

On a lighter note, "Groundhog Day". A man forced to live the same day over and over until he is perfected. At first it seems like he's hit the jackpot and can indulge every animal ego to the fullest (seemingly) without consequences. Eventually he finds this existence empty and meaningless, then sets out to do the only thing he can do, make the most of every second of every day to be the best he can be.

"Gandhi" is also one of my all time favorites. He was just so incredible. He seemed to recognize from a very young age the Oneness of all people. During the long struggle for India's independence from England, he treated all with respect and dignity. And along the way he gave up pretty much every material attachment that he had. Truly inspiring.

Finally, "The Motorcycle Diaries". The story of Che Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado and their travels through South America. The music is very powerful. The images of the indigenous people are haunting. The capstone scene for me is where Che swims across the Amazon to be united with the sick who are separated on the other side of the river. I really don't know much about who Che really was so I cannot judge his actions and political history. But this movie deeply communicates that sense of connectedness and unity, which can only be the One, the Essence, between all people.

I would love to hear about other movies people like and as you were saying, why they found them moving.

Strength and Blessings,
Gina
