What can you guys tell me about Haile Selassie I, Lion of Judah?

Rastafarians claim that he is the blood of Solomon and Sheba, from that visit of hers to Israel in the old days, from which the Song of Songs took root. Marcus Garvey came to Jamaica, preaching a return to Africa, for the Messiah was taking birth, and he preached of a certain verse from either Revelation or Isaiah, where it said the Messiah would come from Ethiopia, or the east or something.

Now, the rituals of the Rastas aside (Ganja smoking as a eucharistic ritual, matted locks, vegetarian, no alcohol, etc) what does anyone know about Haile Selassie I as a prophet, as the Lion of Judah? They claim him to be Christ, and theyve made a culture of devotion out of it, one which I love...reggae music is beautiful. But I want more information on the whole idea of JAH Rastafari. Their religion is a mixture of antiquated Judaism with Coptic Christianity, with a mystical zing of individualized devotion...there isnt much 'dogma' at all. I had some interesting astral experiences concerning Rastas and Ganja, but I want to know more about the man himself, what spiritual attainments did he have, etc?

Much love

Hi Shivoham,

Unfortunately I don't know anything about this person you speak of, however if you have had some interesting astral experiences I would suggest you explore these further, I would imagine you would get much more meaningful information this way than from anything anyone can tell you.

Strength to everyone!

Hi Shivoham,

As an Ethiopian person, what I know about Emperor Hailesellasie is the non-spiritual side of his life which includes the ' Lion of Judah' story. Rastefrianism originated from his real name Teferi and his title Ras( before he became an emperor) which is an equivalent to Lord. I do not know the details of their belief but I am aware that the movement started when he visited their country and a seven year old dry season ended and they had rain just as his plane landed in Kingston Airport. I must add that there are no Rasteferians in Ethiopia however, the Ras Teferians consider Ethiopia to be their Zion, the homeland they are destined to go back to.

The story of Queen of Sheba and Solomon hence the 'Lion of Judah' is more part of an Ethiopian story than his spiritual importance. The offspring of their union became Ethiopia's Emperor Menelik the first.

I, like you, have a great respect and fondness for Rasteferians however, I can not say I have any experience or knowledge of what they believe in. Some of them have converted to Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity and they run their own churches.

Hope this helps.

Hey Tsehay

Thanks a lot for the info, it helps put things in perspective...its interesting that there are no Rastafarians in Ethiopia, though I knew there was the Ethiopian Orthdox and some Coptic sects. Very cool, ok thank you.

The whole dry spell story is quite cool also, can you imagine that? Rain as his plane touched the ground after seven years. Very cool. A wise man told me that there is no such thing as coincidence.

Much love to all of you

Hi Shivoham,

I just wanted to add that you may find more information about the Jah-Rastafari on the DVD "Bob Marley: The Legend Live, Santa Barbara County Bowl Concert, November 25th 1979". In the extras there is some documentary footage and explanation about their history and beliefs. The concert is also excellent.

Hope you are doing well.
Love and Blessings,
Gina

Hey Gina, thanks for the info, that definitely looks like something worth looking into....I love reggae music :)

and Tsehay, the best perspective is an iner perspective, thanks for sharing one

Thanks again, hope to hear more on this thread, the whole idea of spirituality is drastically altered when one delves into the Gnostic mysteries...it doesnt become a mater of belief or not; it turns into much greater things.

Blessings and much, much love
