Hi New,
I think concentrating on the heart beats has a lot of advantages, at least for me. It can be hard to get in tune with the practice and begin to hear the heartbeats at first. However, through this practice you stimulate the heart chakra (which helps with astral projection) and if you combine it with awareness you can experience higher states and receive intuition premonitions.
good luck,

It's first impression is bizzare to many but, there is the "Anahat" sound as described by Samael Aun Weor, and which Robert Monroe swears by.
It is that little "voice" or that high pitched electrical humming sound in the top of your head that Monroe states: "If one can listen (concentrate) on this for about three minutes then the vibrations rush in..."
I can personally attest to what Monroe stated but find it is not the thing I am best at.
Samael noticed that if you were to take a cricket and place it in a jar next to your bedside, and concentrate on it's song it makes, that the Anahat noise resonates with this little bug's song much like the strings of a piano vibrates in tune with another being played next to it.

Hi Joseph,
If you cannot hear your heartbeat you can visualize it beating; this will usually make the heartbeat more noticable.
What I often did before doing a concentration on the heartbeat is doing some push ups to make the heart beat faster. Breathing in and out deeply (for a few times) also makes the heart beat faster. Then when you notice it again, you concentrate on it.
All the best with your exercises.

I think that I will try the listening to the heart thing and the void thing. When I get better at astral projecting I'll try the sound in your head thing.

You could try feeling the heartbeats 'expanding' until they fill your whole body, starting with the heart region, then feeling the heartbeat in your whole chest area, then your whole upper body, then your arms also, and so on, until your whole body beats as one... This technique is one of my favourites, I had my first AP experiences using it so I can definitely recommend it :-)

Hi
I like that idea of concentrating on the dark void in front of you. I will try that soon and see how it goes. What works for me is being aware of my breathing but the trouble with that is 9 times out of 10 I fall asleep. Tonight I am going to be aware of my breathing until I get relaxed enough then I am going to keep repeating in my mind, mind awake. You can say anything.

Can anyone expand on what Apakhana said about this "Anahat" sound? I've tried it recently, and it was quite effective. If it's for certain that concentrating on it for roughly 3 minutes will induce AP, then I think it could be very handy for beginners of AP to use. All anyone has to go on when they start out is "Relax a lot, concentrate a lot, keep doing it, you'll get there eventually". A simple, straight-forward technique like this could be exactly what beginners like myself need. It's unlikely that anyone will get it on their first try, but something solid to aim for (concentrating on the sound for 3 minutes) is potentially very effective, IMO.
