Hi New to Astral,

to what I've read in the "A course in astral travel and dreams book, there is the 5th dimension. This dimension has two planes: the astral plane, and the mental plane. The astral plane is the place where we are when we go to sleep.
I've heard there are different levels of vibration. How we can interact and travel in that plane depends on our level of consciousness and awareness, the state of our energies, and other aspects of our being, all of which we can learn to improve and get better with practice both here in the physical world and there in the astral plane.

We can't assume that we may been given incorrect information if we haven't any knowledge of truth to start with. So the best information you can get is in your own gnosis.

Different people have different ways of explaning it, but when you work it all out mathematically, they are all arriving at the same result.

I am most familiar with the way the Sephirot are used in explaining creation and the degrees of psychological separation between them. As an example, there are many different ways to teach this tree of life but they all arrive at the same conclusions.

Yes, Ive also heard, 7 but even if you read all the info on this site and all the books and study all info on OBE's, Your experiences could be totally diffrent than explaned, So I would just learn the techniques and then explore your own mind in your OBE's 

Most theories I have heard have spoken of astral being constituted by 7 planes or levels, and oftentimes each having numerous sub-levels. Having in mind the way this site uses the defenition of a plane, as in entire astral and mental being two planes within one dimension, we would have to speak of it in forms of levels and not planes (though end result is the same).

I cannot say weither there truly are exactly 7 major levels. But I can say that the astral defenetely has numerous levels, where the higher up you go the purer the energies and nicer the area. If there are 7 major levels, it does seem clear that each ought to have numerous sub-levels.

I once asked a spirit I encountered how close we were to the physical reality. He gave me a certain number and told me we were on that floor. Which I found interesting, how the way he referred to the levels as floors. Sometimes we create fancy terminoligies and defenitions, while those who are most used to that form of reality and thinking - use very basic ways to describe the same thing.
