The Power of Mantras Workshop - Updated Pics

The Power of Mantras Workshop
Getting back into gear for the next round of courses, we held an intimate Power of Mantras workshop tonight at the Gnostic Centre in Toronto. I figured it might be interesting to give a story in pictures for you to get a sense of what it would be like to attend a small mantra night at the Centre here.
Overall it was a very positive event and gave a good boost to everyone in attendance. Hopefully it will give us all a better sense of the possibilities with these powerful exercises and spark some real activity at the Centre when the new courses start this weekend.

Getting closer.

We're in! Please sign in at the desk...

Olga explains a fine point about one of the 4 mantras we looked into.

Olga listens to feedback from one of the practices we did.

A relaxed crowd after one of the practices.

We brought out the old board for this special workshop. Next to it though, take a look at our newly 'installed' library.

Close-up of the library. We are very fortunate that one of the volunteers at the Centre also happens to be a librarian with the largest public library system in North America; however, ours is not quite that big yet - we're getting there! :-)

After the workshop, everyone stayed for coffee, tea, and a chat in the cafe. There were no meals today, but look out for gourmet and healthy options to choose from every Sunday... Hope to see you there!

Former Library spot - now filled with candles, incense, and a symbolic engraving. Soon there will be also be an enclave with a symbolic flame that never goes out...

The stage. Holy Grail to be added to the top shortly...

Here you see it before the people arrived, but it was a great space full of activity at the courses and practice sessions this Sunday!

Hi Jordan, looks like a nice
Hi Jordan, looks like a nice event you have there.
If you permit me a question about the mantra sign: it states that the E in padme should be pronounced as the e in red. However, if you listen to the gate mantra (from the course areas) Samael pronounces the e of gate more like the vowel "a" is pronounced in English.
I wonder if this is different for the "om mani padme yum" mantra?
Olivier.
Hello Olivier, It's a bit
Hello Olivier,
It's a bit confusing because the vowels in English are not pronounced as their letter names are said. Yes, the 'e' in padme is pronounced the same as the 'e' in the 'gate' mantra (ga ... tay/teh).
Some of the vowels in English are sort of inbetween real vowels, so for example, it is the same as somewhere between the 'e' in the words 'red' or 'let', and the 'e' in the words 'eh' or 'say'.
In general, when you see the 5 main vowels written in mantras, they are actually pronounced as follows:
i = eeeee as in three
e = eh as in red/say
o = o as in toe
u = uuuuuu as in zoo
a = aaaa as in far
btw, another thing about this particular mantra is that it has a light singing tone to it, and the the 'h' in 'hum' is not pronounced when we do the mantra 'om mani padme hum'.

Hey Olivier, A long "A"
Hey Olivier,
A long "A" sound, as in Place, if you take the sound slowly it's actually a run from eh sound (as in bet), followed by the i sound, as in bee.
When I do "Om Mani Padme Hum" it does get an eh sound like in bet, maybe cut off ever so slightly with an ee sound.
So hard to describe like that. There are sound files on the internet of monks doing it. It's a pretty popular mantra :)
And now I see Jordan replied
And now I see Jordan replied too, have a nice day :)
Looks like a nice evening
Looks like a nice evening Jordan & co, nice job!
I always found that vowel explanations in English just create more confusion than they clear up, lol :-) If it's e as in red/say, o as in toe, and u as in zoo, then I guess mantras are pronounced differently on your side of the Atlantic...? Ah well, as long as they work... :-)

Thanks for your replies. I
Thanks for your replies.
I was just a bit confused since to me the vowels in red and say do not sound the same.
Anyway, I think the vowels in my mother tongue (Dutch) are pretty close to the what Samael meant when he wrote them down in Spanish. So I guess I will stick to to my mother tongue then :-)
Thanks again and much success in the work.
Olivier.
Looks like a very
Looks like a very strengthening event, Jordan. Thanks for posting the pictures.

Thanks Gabrielle, I wanted
Thanks Gabrielle,
I wanted to mention though, it turns out the library only lasted about a week in that spot. We have already moved on to a new setup, which gives a more comfortable space for that, as well as a more spiritual and sacred feel to the main room's practice and talks area.
So here goes the latest picture show (see above)...
Congratulations everyone!
Congratulations everyone! you have created a really lovely and inspiring space.

What a beautiful thing, I
What a beautiful thing, I will have to get to a center soon, meet some people, take part in the group practices, it looks awesome :)
Anyone have any info on the last mantra on that whiteboard though? Where did Hare Christo come from? I think of Hare Krishna, Hare Ram, and the meaning is not changed AT ALL even when the words are, but what is the source of this mantra?
