I recently have started meditating on a regular basis in order to hopefully live a happier and more fulfilled life. Thus far, I have been able to release a large amount of bitterness/anger that I have carried inside myself, so things are going fairly well. However, one of my greatest issues involving participation in meditation and in life in general is that I seem to be unable to silence my mind. Throughout my entire day there is an inner commentary running in my mind expressing my fears, anxieties, obsessions, and of the course the normal trivial riff raff that we all consider in a normal day. I believe that because of this, I largely amplify the stress I deal with in my life, and frankly the whole process is maddening. I feel as if I am simply going insane because of obsessive compulsive thoughts. The fact that I am by nature a rather neurotic and scatter brained individual only adds to the problem; while pondering can at times be good, I feel that it is my undoing at times. And of course, this hampers the meditation that I seek to do on a daily basis because I am unable to commit fully, as my mind is always running of in another direction. In other words, I am seeking some specific technique that I can use on a regular basis whether I am at school, home, or on the go that will enable me to quiet my mind and finally find some peace! Any help would would be great. Thanks. (I am a newcomer to mediation and the main educational source I have been using has been Osho's Meditation: The first and last freedom, by the way) |

Hi SkyValley,
First off I want to say how great your observations are. Although you feel very overwhelmed with all those thoughts, annoying anxieties, etc., what you have seen is really remarkable. Most of us are in the exact same boat, but we often don't pay enough attention to the workings of our own psyche (our thoughts, emotions) and therefore suffer without really knowing the cause. The fact that you've seen those things is the first step to finding real peace.
I would strongly recommend the Self Discovery course as it provides lots of techniques to really understand ourselves as well as methods to live more in the moment, giving us freedom from our seemingly unending steams of thoughts or other unpleasant states. The techniques in the course can be applied at any time during the day - at work, on the bus, shopping, with family, etc. The courses have just started so you might still be able to register - check out "Courses" at the top or If you can't register there, I'd recommend emailing course@gnosticweb.com and you could still likely get in.
I think overall what's important to realize in finding peace, is that all the things that make us suffer like our thoughts, anxieties, irritations, etc. have an existence unto their own - they aren't really who we are, although we usually just accept them for who we are. Through gaining a more conscious understanding of them and learning more about who we actually are, we can gradually eliminate them, bringing us more peace and happiness. This is all covered in the courses. You may find the topics and experiences shared in Awareness, Self-Observation or Retrospection here http://www.gnosticweb.com/Inspiration-and-Spirituality very interesting.
All the best!
