Purely from what I have read alone, it is apparently concentration that helps one from falling asleep too early as well as problems with not being able to fall asleep.
From what I gather, when you are fully relaxed, it is a matter of concentration on a particular astral exercise, for example the heartbeats, which when done perfectly is supposed to cause the projection.
How long it takes no doubt changes depending on the person, and as I am still yet to experience astral projection, I can not speak with true knowledge at this point.
If you have enrolled for the course, it will explain it all a lot better and hopefully lead you towards these experiences.
Best of luck Jake

Well, in essence what you are attempting to do is to fall asleep, while remaining aware of yourself.
Though concentration can be a misleading statement. It really has to be a relaxed concentration. If one concentrates to hard, it will end up keeping you awake. Kind of like when you had a bad day or can't stop thinking about something, and it keeps you up all night.
The time it takes varies greatly depending on how easily you fall asleep, how much practice you have at it, how able you are to keep your concentration alive, and even the same person will most likely experience substantial differences depending on how your body is doing that day, how well rested you are, and all the other factors.
In essence, yes you are trying to just sit there relaxed until you fall asleep, but the key is to keep your mind from wandering to the point that you lose your self in dreams.
I find that I normally can't astral project just from the exercises alone, and I generally have to let my mind wander , but I keep bringing myself back to the exercises or my concentration point on a regular basis, and that usually leads me to projection.
Some times, however, you just won't be able to do it. Your mind may be to wore out. It's often helpful to sleep for 4-5 hours, and wake yourself up. Then go for a short walk, and come back to bed. This can help you by allowing your mind to be rested, and your body to be tired, aiding in the falling asleep process.
I find that I project most often during a mid day nap. In fact, it usually happens quite by accident, and I'm not actually trying to project, it's just that before I get lost in dreams, I notice the split sensations, and Voila!
Of course, no environmental factors, or anything else for that matter is a real substitute for effort and will.

It's very much on par with what was said regarding self-awareness, not so much "concentration."
You asked how to stay awake during attempting astral travel. You DO want to fall asleep, but be aware you're asleep.
Don't focus on sensations, although at first you will have to in order to get used to them.
You would probably benefit from the waking up in dreams techniques that have worked for me. Try those and also remember to ask yourself what dimension you're in while awake during the day, and you will eventually remember to do it while dreaming
(although I did, you might not, but most likely it's the same for everyone).

eventhough i'm a beginner i'm jus' sayin' wat i read,,.
* Don't try at night,u'll fall asleep most of the times.
* try at early morning after u've slept enought (as in wake up sleep technique)
Relaxation takes abt half an hour or so if u r a beginner,.
If nothin works try Affirmations, the best part is u don't hav to do wait until u are completely relaxed, instead u can fall asleep just repeating those sentenses,.
Good Luck.
