Hi Jake,
1) We have bodies that exist in different dimensions, including the astral and the physical dimensions. As we fall asleep in the physical dimension, we automatically shift to the astral body. Our consciousness goes with the astral body automatically (it is the consciousness that shifts) and the physical body lies there asleep. You don't have to do anything to make the shift occur, it happens everytime you go to sleep. Normally, we actually slip into dreams when this happens, so we don't notice. With astral projection, we try to keep control of the mind (by concentrating), so that we can go there in a conscious state.
2) You can try doing a visualization relaxation technique if the tensing up approach doesn't work well for you. Some people like to visualize or imagine their body parts relaxing one-by-one. You could also visualize a calming light moving through the body, from head to toe. As you visualize these things, you would try to relax the different body parts. For example, you could visualize a calming light moving down your face and at the same time, you would be allowing this light to relax the muscles in your face.
3) Awareness means paying attention to your five senses. So, you can approach awareness by being aware of your body (using the sense of touch). For example, you could become "aware" of how the wind feels on your skin. You can also be aware by paying attention to what you see, hear, taste, and smell throughout the day. You also don't have to pay attention to all of these at the same time. You could chose to focus on what you see, for example, if that works best for you.
I'm glad that your awareness and concentration have improved! Good luck in the coming course round.
