Hi Thomas,
You will know what it is as soon as you experience it. You acquire it when you accomplish a certain amount of esoteric work, but you might start to experience it before in short flashes as your consciousness will be growing.
Firts thing first, learning how to retain visibility in the physical dimension while being aware is hard enough as it is.

It is not that uncommon for normal people to temporarily experience polyvision (or whatever you want to call it).
You might for instance have heard of people waking up, going to the bathroom and seeing a greyish person/spirit standing int he hallway, and then vanishing in thin air. These kinds of stories are not uncommon.
I feel quite confident in saying that in most cases the following happened:
Person woke up and had his 3rd eye chakra temporarily open. It is not that uncommon for this chakra to be temporarily open in rare occasions for some peopel when they just woken up. He/she goes to bathroom, and due to the state of the chakra, is able to see the spirit standing in the hallway. The chakra now closes, since person is not developed enough for the chakra to remain open. The person often thinks the spirit went away and perceived it physically, when in reality it was only the ability to see the spirit that went away. The spirit is of course still standing there.
This I would say is a fom of polyvision, just that it was only experienced briefly.
Some can supposebly also see with closed eyes when in deeper meditation. In these cases they are able to see the room they are in, much the same as using physical eyes. Only that they are perceiving it higher dimensionally, and if there is a non-physical being or person nearby, they would see it. This of course without actually being split from the physical body. But this isn't all that common... It is more common to have experienced this very thing on single occasions as a rarity.
But this is just my impressions of course :)

Thomas,
One exercise you could do which might enable you to have temporary polyvision is the next time you are lucid in a dream, try to remain lucid until the dream ends and your physical body wakes up from sleep. Sometimes when I have a lucid dream, my astral or dreaming mind eventually becomes tired and has to fall asleep as my physical body wakens from the astral experience. In the online course for the book 'A Course in Astral Travel and Dreams', it is recommended that one does not move when waking from sleep in order to prevent the astral body from becoming immediately locked into the physical one. At this point one is supposed to remember much of one's dreams and silently chant the 'Raom Gaom' mantra if need be.
However, try to look around yourself when waking without physically moving, and sometimes without moving one's eyes too much. If your physical body is not fully awake, your astral body may float a little from the other body and you can somehow see into the astral. So the goal is after becoming lucid in a dream that eventually ends, continue with the lucidity as your physical body has not yet wakened. Then you may achieve some success at either astral projection or polyvision in order to see what is happening in the Astral Dimension in the immediate proximity to your physical body. Real spirits or imaginary thought forms or dream images could be around you when you are awake and especially when you are asleep.
Also, some one else has posted either in this forum or another that if one has the ability to see what is really going one around one self in the Astral, it could cause one to go mentally insane. That is one of the reasons why drug or audio induced polyvision is not recommended. Instead, one should progress to a certain level of spiritual maturity before dream lucidity, astral projection, and astral vision from the physical prospective are achieved.
