I cannot say i've had an experience where I can truly 100% say I projected, but.
The surroundings would have to be either in my computer chair, in bed, or at my dads house. Physical conditions of being not tire. Mental conditions of not overloaded, ready to go somewhere and get some things figured out, peaceful, aware, and my emotional conditions, I cannot have alot of anxiety, I've tried to meditate to clear my head because i've been feeling like my head is just loaded with thoughts and everything, it feels like it's completely full, anyways I didn't like the feeling the unrational part of me took it as being a bad sign, and I was so paranoid I couldn't even concentrate let alone meditate. If I have these conditions, I know I can definitely get into a meditative state, or try to at least. I don't beleive I could project unless i'm listening to a guided meditation. I can't hold my concentration that long on my own yet.

Like John says mental overload is important. The best conditions mentally is when life seems routine and nothing stands out so the mind can be less active. If I've had a hiccup in the day's events I can usually deal with it and it doesnt really affect my mental state. But if someone unexpectedly or inexplicably upsets me I tend to spiral into this internal questioning and it's hard for me to break it off and I may be 'rattled' for the rest of the day. Physically I like to be lying on my back in the dark but I find that as I'm concentrating my hearing seems really acute and sounds seem extra loud. Am training myself to learn to ignore them. I've noticed willpower is really vital - not the sort where you are coaching yourself internally with words but a wordless determination. Something Matija pointed out in another post is that the less expectations you have about the practice the better luck you have - focus on the process not the outcome. I think this has been my prob to date.

Hey Maggie,
I find if I am really mystically inspired and really want an experience I will practice and get one. Though with such yearning I find the practice itself is very strong as is my will so that it might take me more then a few hours but eventually something significant will happen.
Mystical yearning is very powerful....though sometimes elusive. Thanks for sharing Maggie all the best with your astralling.

The best one's were when I am focused and well into the state of paralysis, past the hypnogogic dream imagery - without getting sucked into it.
Not so much relaxed, I just go numb and can not feel my limbs, they are asleep.
It seems that waking from dreams is another way, mabey better, for me. It really does depend on how aware you remain after practicing awareness in the day.

When I do project, it's more often in the afternoon, and I take a nap of sorts, which for some reason I tend to fall asleep much faster during.
And falling asleep quickly tends to leave my mind more aware, which I will feel the kick of the paralysis kick in, and from there it's just a matter of concentration.

Hi Maggiebak,
I really need to be relaxed or I will become too tense to fall asleep on my back. I have to be on my back...I haven't been able to project from my side. It can't be too cold in the room or I'll be inclined to sleep on my side or put the blanket over my head to keep warm :) I can deal with outside noises, as long as there are no abrupt sounds that will pull me out of the relaxed state (e.g., the telephone rings in the room). Emotionally, the more stable I've been all day, the better my chances are because then I have energy to use for my practice.
Take care,
Gabrielle

Hi Maggiebak,
Thank you for this thread.
For me an ideal setting for astral projection is when I have an opportunity to practice intensively during a day and able to stay in awareness for a long periods of time, obtaining a clear internal state and having a high clarity of perception in the same time.
What happens if after such a day I wake up in the middle of a night?
Then I am very close to come back to the astral, my physical body is very relaxed...and it takes just a bit of effort to astral project or to recognize a dream image and to wake up in the astral.
Best wishes,
