A Night at the Symphony with Mozart’s Requiem
This past Saturday night a few of us from the Berkeley center went to the Concert Hall at Berkeley's University to listen to Mozart's Requiem Mass.
We feel very lucky to have our center a couple of blocks from classical music performances at a very reasonable price. Once again, Ralph, our event coordinator got us an $8 deal to see an outstanding performance of this classical music masterpiece.
We all came out very impressed and uplifted. Listening to this piece on a CD or mp3 just doesn't compare to the experience of a live performance. It sounded like music coming directly from the heavens that spoke to the consciousness within us.
Next on the list Handel's Messiah - we are all looking forward to it.

Michael, Lucia, Bob, Pati, Ralph, Geraldine, Kevin, Anne Linn, Angela and Alejandro.
Here is the English translation of the Requiem, pretty powerful stuff!
I. Introit: Requiem
Grant them eternal rest, Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.
You are praised, God, in Zion,
and homage will be paid to You in Jerusalem.
Hear my prayer,
to You all flesh will come.
Grant them eternal rest, Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.
II. Kyrie
Lord, have mercy on us.
Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.
III. Sequence
Dies irae
Day of wrath, day of anger
will dissolve the world in ashes,
as foretold by David and the Sibyl.
Great trembling there will be
when the Judge descends from heaven
to examine all things closely.
Tuba mirum
The trumpet will send its wondrous sound
throughout earth's sepulchres
and gather all before the throne.
Death and nature will be astounded,
when all creation rises again,
to answer the judgement.
A book will be brought forth,
in which all will be written,
by which the world will be judged.
When the judge takes his place,
what is hidden will be revealed,
nothing will remain unavenged.
What shall a wretch like me say?
Who shall intercede for me,
when the just ones need mercy?
Rex tremendae
King of tremendous majesty,
who freely saves those worthy ones,
save me, source of mercy.
Recordare
Remember, kind Jesus,
my salvation caused your suffering;
do not forsake me on that day.
Faint and weary you have sought me,
redeemed me, suffering on the cross;
may such great effort not be in vain.
Righteous judge of vengeance,
grant me the gift of absolution
before the day of retribution.
I moan as one who is guilty:
owning my shame with a red face;
suppliant before you, Lord.
You, who absolved Mary,
and listened to the thief,
give me hope also.
My prayers are unworthy,
but, good Lord, have mercy,
and rescue me from eternal fire.
Provide me a place among the sheep,
and separate me from the goats,
guiding me to Your right hand.
Confutatis
When the accused are confounded,
and doomed to flames of woe,
call me among the blessed.
I kneel with submissive heart,
my contrition is like ashes,
help me in my final condition.
Lacrimosa
That day of tears and mourning,
when from the ashes shall arise,
all humanity to be judged.
Spare us by your mercy, Lord,
gentle Lord Jesus,
grant them eternal rest. Amen.
IV. Offertorium
Domine Jesu
Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory,
liberate the souls of the faithful,
departed from the pains of hell
and from the bottomless pit.
Deliver them from the lion's mouth,
lest hell swallow them up,
lest they fall into darkness.
Let the standard-bearer, holy Michael,
bring them into holy light.
Which was promised to Abraham
and his descendants.
Hostias
Sacrifices and prayers of praise, Lord,
we offer to You.
Receive them in behalf of those souls
we commemorate today.
And let them, Lord,
pass from death to life,
which was promised to Abraham
and his descendants.
V. Santus
Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of Sabaoth.
Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
VI. Santus
Blessed is He who cometh in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Agnus Dei
Lamb of God, who takes away
the sins of the world,
grant them eternal rest.
Lamb of God, who takes away
the sins of the world,
Grant them eternal rest.
Lamb of God, who takes away
the sins of the world,
grant them eternal rest forever.
VI. Communion
Lux aeterna
Let eternal light shine on them, Lord,
as with Your saints in eternity,
because You are merciful.
Grant them eternal rest, Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them,
as with Your saints in eternity,
because You are merciful.

Wow, how lucky. The
Wow, how lucky. The requiem's one of my favourite pieces of music, wish I could see it live some day!
Thanks for the English translation too, Pati.

Mozarts Requiem is great
Mozarts Requiem is great when it is just a recording, must be even greater when heard live.
Looks great Pati. We've been
Looks great Pati. We've been going as a group to Messiah here for the past few years and it is always an uplifting treat. A few people (not mentioning any names Olga or Jenny) have been pushing to go again this year too.
What date is yours this year - maybe it will be in sync!

That would of been amazing
That would of been amazing to see and thanks for writing up the translation. I never new the words for the Requim were that powerful.
Good to see Angela made it to the orchestra after all, similar plans made for a classical music outing in Brisbane didn't go that well :-)
All for $8. Thats awesome.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi guys, sounds like you had
Hi guys, sounds like you had a great night out!
Perth's centre needs an event coordiantor I think!
Michael seems to have one eye blue and the other red?!
And finally, hi Angela, nice to see you're all settled in nicely to your new location (and climate!).
Adiós amigos,
C.
Thank you for this
Thank you for this translation Patricia. Dose somebody know if there are operas translated to other languages of such great compositors as Mozart and Wagner?

Yes, I always look a bit odd
Yes, I always look a bit odd in pics with a flash. The reason being that I have an artificial lens in my right eye which causes the pupil to never dilate. Since the dilation of the pupils must have something to do with the red eye effect, my right eye never has red eye. Thus, I end up looking like some kind of evil hanasmussin in photos.

Hi Gyorgi, Whenever I watch
Hi Gyorgi,
Whenever I watch DVDs of operas there are often subtitles in many different languages available. And there are certainly translations of great operas to be performed in other languages.
Students at the music department of a university here in Halifax often sing opera pieces in English translation so that the audience can get a better feeling for what is going on. And in the Magic Flute DVD by Ingmar Bergman, they don't sing it in the original German, but in Swedish.
Look on IMDB the website if you want to find a specific translation performed. What language in particular did you want? If you are interested in lyrics, an internet search should give you a write up of some arias,
Good luck!

But of course! Thank you
