Hi everyone! It's not easy to avoid pork as it is added up in many products. When I started to work against egos, I used to eat yogurts containing gelatine and coulnd't understand why I am constantly under attacks of lust. What products were the most suprising for you, something you had used to eat and later realized its spiritual harm?

Hey Vadim,

An interesting one :) Pork is definitely hard to avoid these days.

I remember being surprised by the E additives in some kinds of cheese offered here, also..almost anything packed and fridge-kept.

I hope there is no jelatin-youghurt here :S

Take care,

Thank you, Pavlin,

I like cheese, and it's hard to find a good one in Canadian stores, I hope it's better in your country.

Do you know about ice-cream and cakes, what is added there?

Hi Vadim,

Whenever possible, I try to buy Kosher certified food because it's pretty unlikely there would be any pork in the food. Halal food is also good, but there's no real certification... but it's easier to find restaurants that claim to be Halal.

Cheese is a tricky one. When I do buy it, which is very rare, I try to buy organic cheese which is usually just organic pasteurized milk and bacterial culture.

I have trouble finding cake (or even bread for that matter) that is either kosher or is free of "questionable" ingredients. There's some good ice cream out there; I think Hagen Daaz makes some kosher ice cream.

In terms of surprises, I used to have a rough time after eating Kraft Dinner until I found out there were pork enzymes in it.

It's really hard to avoid pork, but it's so very important.

All the best!

I don't know much of ice-cream and cakes, just that there are some E numbers there as well.

I generally try to avoid sweet things, feels much safer and healthier that way.

Interesting that the Bible is actually against eating pork comparing it to eating rats and "other rubbish". Funny how Christians somehow missed this line and never implied the anti-pork attitude in their lives (unlike Muslims in their religion).

fortunately we don't deal with the E numbers here in the US, i think that's ridiculous to have to deal with all those things... there are a few things which we have to watch out for, especially in vitamins, like magnesium stearate can be vegetable, beef, or pork derived. so unless it specifies which then best to stay away. i just shop for kosher vitamins online.

ummm... one disappointing thing is i LOVE sausage, pepperoni, bacon.... waa.

Hey guys

It seems pork can be in almost anything these days. Biscuits, bread, ice cream, chocolate, oil, etc. I even found some in yeast. I think that one of the E numbers makes a very good preservative and is why it can be everywhere. If in doubt of any dubious ingredients ring the manufacturer, they can be very helpful. I once rang one up and they sent me out a large product list of theirs that listed all the vegetarian and vegan products that they had.

Also I am not sure how it is where you live but certain companies in Australia due to their religious/ethical beliefs will be vegetarian/vegan so wont contain any pork in it either. Two that come to mind is Sanitarium and Bulla (I think that these companies may just be here though).

Cheers

In Canada there are specific places, or even the whole supermarkets where you can buy only Kosher and Halal food. That's really great!

When I started vegetarianism I found it complicated because today meat is everywhere. But after some time I realized it not hard at all! It is just necessary to keep the eyes open and maintain the decision agains the social pressure around us. After a while, people around us stop the pressure to make us to eat dead animals. By the way, VMSAW has a conference where he talk against vegetarians and he talks about a dog he had and die because he gave no meat to the dog. I am vegetarian because I don't like the way the treat the animals in these commercial farmers now. That is horrible!!! Because my job sometimes I eat animal products but when I am on the mountains working in the forests with local communities (I am a tropical forester) and it is not polite to say no when they kill a chicken, i.e. just because you were visiting them.

About lust, I was watching the VMSAW videos on YouTube and one called my attention when he mentioned he whipped himself as a help to kill the I of lust. Comments about this?

This is a little off topic but I have read a few references to 'twirl the whip'.

I found one in Hell, Death Karma p158.

"It would be better for those who understand it to ride this animal and to tame it with the whip of the will."

However I do recall a mention (I cant find) to that a Gnostic must wield the whip of self punishment. Or something to that extent.

I think it is a symbolical reference that you have heard. There would be karma for damaging ones physical body. But then again I do not Know and that's what counts.

Best of luck in your studies
