The Peace of a Silent Mind
by Mike

Even in the moments when all is silent around me, my mind can still keep chattering away. And amidst this chattering what I often long for is a real silence of my mind, for inner tranquility, where I can simply be without my thoughts suffocating me.
The practice of meditation has given me these moments of inner tranquility - blissful holidays away from the compulsive barrage of thoughts pervading my mind. But there is another benefit to meditation, even more amazing, which at present I've only been able to glimpse at, which is the potential for an out of body experience...
On one particular day, I had planned to do a meditation as an evening practice. I put in strong efforts throughout the day to practice awareness in order to prepare myself. Then when it came time to do my practice, I prayed very intently to the divine for positive results in my meditation.
I lay down and relaxed myself, letting go of any tension and allowing sleepiness to take over my body. Once fully relaxed, I began to meditate. During the practice, instances of pristine tranquility began to arrive. The tranquility I experienced was wonderful, but it is hard to put into words. It was infinitely restful. My mind was completely devoid of thought - it was truly freeing.
Along with this freedom, I felt beautifully warm and relaxed and I could tell I was falling asleep. Suddenly, I experienced an overwhelming, intense heavenly light: instead of darkness, I suddenly perceived a brilliant, yet still very gentle, white light and I felt like I was traveling warp speed inwards into a beautiful region of great warmth and peace.
This all happened so fast and it was so overwhelming that I wound up being startled and the experience came to an immediate end, but this experience nonetheless had a profound effect upon me.
The peace of a silent mind, and above all the short glimpse of the bliss beyond this physical world, left me in awe.
