The Gospel of Judas by Mattias

I already knew about it, but the excitement I felt when I first heard of this 1700 year old cultural treasure is beyond words.

Just the name of this gospel is enough to provoke people, even whole societies. Most of the world shares the same view of Judas, religious believers and materialists alike. A spy who sells information to a foreign country is labelled a "Judas". A once beloved footballer who changes teams and now plays for a team on the opposite side of town is called "Judas" by the football fans. A friend who betrays you in a game of Risk with a smile, and perhaps some irritation, is called "Judas". Everybody knows what the term "Judas" means, but a few years back, I learned something most don't know.

Let me reminisce for a while. When I was in college, my friends and I used to get together at the local coffee shop to discuss things we thought were important. These gatherings were a nice break from the monotonous studying, but every meeting was more or less the same. Except one, that stands out in my mind. A friend of mine, who knew that I was studying comparative religion, asked me out of the blue: ‘Did Jesus commit suicide?' I was stunned at the question; this friend had never shown any interest in spiritual matters, even though he studied western philosophy for several years. He continued: ‘I mean, how can someone like Jesus possibly be betrayed by Judas? It doesn't add up'. I agreed, but didn't really know how to answer him.

Around this time in my life, I found the teachings of modern Gnosis. I had a spiritual urge that was driving me more or less crazy, and I had read literarily hundreds of books in my search for the truth. Mysticweb was a very modest site with a forum that, frankly, didn't look that good, but I liked the answers that someone called Mark was giving people. They also offered something that I had never seen before: free courses in astral travel and esoteric knowledge based on Gnosticism. As so many others, I started out a bit sceptical, but the information I got really made a difference - it changed my life. I realized that I didn't have to be afraid all the time, sad all the time. I had a choice and I decided to live a spiritual life. No matter how many obstacles I have had to overcome, I never regret that choice.

"I would like to speak to you about Judas, the man of Kariot, the one you have cursed many times, but who was a beloved brother of the Son of Man whose name was Jesus" (Cosani, A. (2003) Flight of the Feathered Serpent, USA: Absolute Publishing)

While I was taking the courses in modern Gnosis a book was recommended to me - The Flight of Feathered Serpent by Armando Cosani. This book was not written by a Gnostic or even a very good person, but the author was for some reason chosen to reveal the truth about Judas. The book was not as easy to understand as the courses I was taking, but I decided, nevertheless, to understand this book and I read it many times. It was an amazing experience. All the things I had learned about Jesus and Judas were false! I would like to say that Judas is as misunderstood as Jesus is in this day and age. This book was a real eye-opener for me and I wish that everyone in the world would read it.

Let's talk about the present now. What does the Gospel of Judas mean to someone who already has an interest in Gnosticism and who already knows an alternative story to what happened between Judas and Jesus? One important thing is that we now have three separate accounts of this controversial way of looking at Judas. All three Masters of Modern Gnosis - V.M Samael, V.M Rabolu and V.M Belzebuub - tell us that Judas was a great Master and that the relationship between him and Jesus is misunderstood by mainstream Christianity. We also have the account of Armando Cosani, in which he claims to have met Judas and reveals Judas's own account of his relationship with Jesus. This book corroborates with the Gnostic Masters' teachings. And now, we have the resurfacing of the Gospel of Judas, a document lost for nearly 1800 years that tells the same story! This is truly amazing and has given me a lot of faith, something that is very important to me.

I may not understand every single line of the document, but the Gospel of Judas speaks to me as a whole. I read it, re-read it, understand bits and pieces, understand things here and there and see parallels between this lost Gospel and the teachings of modern Gnosis. More important than the understanding, however, is the strength it gives me, how good it makes me feel to see that mankind has searched for the truth, for liberation, for thousands of years, and that the findings have been the same as those Master Belzebuub teaches us today; the only difference is that he teaches in a way that everyone can understand, making the path to liberation attainable for all of humanity.
