Hello everyone!! In the meditation on an ego.. in step five (koan or mantra). Is it alright to combine those two?. or just stick to one?. Yesterday i tried to combine the two because i was having a hard time in the koan because it became mechanical when i did the koan. So i did the mantra. is it alright?. tnx!!!!!!!!!! - tos - |

Hi Tos,
How was it for you? Did it work well, helping you to understand better the particular chosen ego and giving you a lot of motivation to look for it in a different situations?
I was explained to use duality technique if it becomes too hard to do a practice properly.
As I understand it, in the meditation on the ego practice, the purpose of the step 5 is to acheive the silencing of the mind, state of no thought, the state of meditation and ideally, go to the causal plane. So if at that moment, you would decide to switch the koan to the mantra, it is the best to use mantra Gate Gate, as it does work to silence the mind.
Please feel free to share with the causes why your practice became mechanical.
All the best!

Hey Tos,
It depends on the effect that switching had on you like Vadim said. I've always been taught that it's best to stick to one practice (even if it's not going so well, because if you stick with a hard practice you can learn a lot from that too) because if you switch half way it can cause problems with concentration. In the past when I've had trouble with practices, if I've stuck with it (as long as I'm not forcing myself to a point of tension or stress) there seems to be a breakthrough point where if you keep doing the practice suddenly you get more understanding of it and it starts going well.
If you're having trouble with a koan in the future and it gets mechanical, maybe you could try just stopping the way you're approaching it, and trying to do the koan in a different way. So for instance, if you're doing it intellectually, you could try putting yourself further into the koan, feeling yourself there.
Good luck for next time! :)

Hi Tos
In the meditation on an ego you can combine the mantra and the koan. So you could start with the mantra and then move onto the koan.
As has already been said it is important to understand what each step is for and how each step progresses from the previous and prepares us for the next step.
All the best!

Hello! Vadim!
Sorry i forgot to answer your question my first two meditation went good!. it was so powerful!. but iam just confuse about step 5. that is all. After i did the meditation i felt very very light!!. like a feather!. =)
And i really saw the results after. It really works!
And one time after i did a meditation on an strong ego of mine. A strong sudden attack of that ego appeared in my dreams. Always teasing me. BUt it failed on its attempt.
How many hours do you guys do this meditation?. just curious.

That's nice to hear Tos!
I liked your metaphor about a feather!
I really like this practice too, yeah.
Just a few hours ago, it helped me a lot to recover from the fascination with a certain egos.
I like how the steps of Meditation on the ego flow one into another and reveal the hidden aspects of psychological defects and give so much strength to keep working on them, because now you see more their nature and their harm.
Usually I practice it for more than one hour, but less than for two.
Thanks for sharing Tos, good luck in your practices, everyone!

Thanks for clarifying that Trent!
I find that too Vadim, that the practice gives me a lot of strength to keep working on the egos and that I remember more throughout the day to have the focus of seeing what my egos are doing and to try and understand them.
I think the shortest I've done the practice for is about 35 - 40 minutes up to about an hour and a half.

Hi David,
It's such a strong practice!
I really like the step #7 -Self-Judgment.
It helps me to detach myself from that ego and realize how bad it is for me.
Later, it's less tempting for me to feed it and there is more motivation to really observe centres with intent to see the egos there, and not to observe half-heartedly, looking only at the fragment of the whole picture.

From what i understand, we don't actually have to project into the Causal Plane with this technique, we can meditate on the ego while here in the physical. Or maybe i got that wrong....any help appreciated.
