I have never had a lucid dream, but I want to experience them. I just don't know how. Why is it that some people have lucid dreams from the time they were a child? What makes them different and why is it a natural occurance for some? Also, does anyone have any tips they can share on how to invoke lucid dreams. I've tried telling my subconscious that I want to have them and I have also prayed to my spirit guides, but I have yet to experience any lucidity in my dreams. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi Sunrise,
A lucid dream is a time when we're in a dream but realize that we're dreaming. This realization is usually due to suddenly being conscious (in the spiritual sense), but there are also some other tricks to help it happen.
Our day-to-day lives are filled with chaos internally: we get angry, we rush to get to work/class, we daydream about a vacation when at work, etc.
This internal chaos is a result of our subconscious and very little time is spent in a state called 'awareness'.
With awareness we perceive the world with our five senses and we are clear from our incessant thoughts, negative emotions, etc. When aware, our consciousness is active, and we can do what needs to be done in our life without the influence of our subconscious.
When we go to sleep at night, we astral project, but we experience the astral plane with the same psychology as our daily life. The difference is that what would have been a simple daydream in the physical becomes a dream image and an entire dream in the astral. And because we generally aren't aware in the physical, we generally aren't aware in the astral so we don't realize we're dreaming.
So the first tip to have lucid dreams is to work on being aware more in daily life. Just try to be in the present moment and get out of the habitual "sleep" of daily life.
By being more aware (more conscious) in the day, you'll start to be more conscious in your dreams and this can help you to realize you're in a dream.
Another tip is the so called "reality check". A reality check is a simple test we can perform to see if we are dreaming.
Because dreams take place in the astral plane and there are different laws there, it is possible that by jumping we can fly and that by pulling our finger it can stretch (just like the picture midway through this page http://www.gnosticweb.com/node/10218 )!
If you start doing little jumps or pulling your finger during the day with the sincere belief that you might be dreaming then you will start to do that in your dreams and at some point realize you are dreaming.
As for why lucid dreaming is easier for some, it seems likely that these people have developed their consciousness more in previous lives. So in their new lives, with more consciousness, they can lucid dream more easily.
Keep praying, too. The Divine do watch over us and they help us a lot when we start putting in sincere efforts. But the help sometimes doesn't always happen immediately (at least not in the way we expect).
I hope this helps.
You might be dreaming right now... you should really do a reality check!
Best wishes,
Mike

Thank you Mike! That was a wonderful and thurough reply. It helps alot!! Can you please elaborate a little more on the awareness. How does one become "aware"? Again, thanks so much for your very helpful answers. P.S. Loved the reality check comment at the end. I hope no one is watching when I start flapping my arms and jumping to see if I can fly! Haha!

Hi Sunrise,
I'm glad that helped. Yes, the reality checks can sometimes seem a bit silly, but they are most helpful.
Essentially we come to awareness by becoming aware of our five senses in a very natural manner. Just sitting in the chair, we can feel our legs on the chair, perhaps hear the sound of the computer, we can see the screen and what's around us in the room, etc.
It's very tricky to explain because awareness actually comes from our consciousness and that is beyond our mind (so words can't really do it justice).
With practice (lots and lots of practice), we start to get a feel for what it is and how to achieve it. The awareness isn't mechanical; it isn't something we have to think about; it is just the simplest and most pure state we can be in. When we get it, we'll know it, and there's often this great feeling of inner peace because we truly are conscious at that instant.
In practicing, we may have it for just a split second and then a thought comes up. Or we find ourselves fidgeting. Or we become too emotional, etc. But when this happens we just have to come back to the awareness and let go of the thought/action/feeling that took it away.
Going for a walk to simply practice being aware can help us to learn more about it. When we walk, that’s all we need to do. So we shouldn’t be thinking or worrying… we should just be walking.
If you are interested in learning more about "Awareness", the Self-Discovery course is all about learning about how to act with more consciousness in daily life, what it is to be aware, etc. and I'd definitely recommend it when the courses start again.
If you have further questions, feel free to ask.
All the best!
Mike

HI Sunrise,
Being aware means being aware of our five senses. When you try to get into awareness just fell everyhting thais going on see whats around you, feel youeself standing or sitting, hear all the sounds aound you, the taste in your mouth and smell any smells. When you do this just try not to think too much, at first it might be hard but with practise it will get easier. The mind should be silent and it should not comment on what you see, smell and so on. You can start from one sense and eventually becoming aware of all them. For me I find that when I close your eyes it can help me to concentrate on all the other senses and get into a proper state.
Try to do this as much as you can and maybe even devote time specifically to this practise, lets say going for a walk trying to investigate what is awareness and how it works. It is very simple practise but it could take time to get it right.
Another important thing is that when you truly aware you can see all your internall processes such as thoughts and emotions. You can see them for what they are and when you identify yourself with one them, a thought for example you lose the awareness. Then you just need to get back to awareness by trying to feel yourself present in the moment and feeling all your five senses.
BY doing this the same thing could happen at night, you can become more ware and then realize that you are dreaming and expirience lucid dreaming that way.
Good luck,
Stas

Hello Sunrise.
To be aware is to live and have conciousness in the present moment.
That means not living in the past, thinking about what happened or what you did, or in the future, what are you going to do or planning events and thinking about many things that could happen.
You can concentrate your attention in your body for example and be aware of every pulse of your heart, how you feel your muscles when your lying down, feel your breathing etc, while you are aware you are not thinking in the past or future you are a witness of the very present.
Be here, Now; but with all your senses, focus all your attention in every second. Many thoughts could come up, but keep concetrated and you will succed.

Hello Sunrise,
In addition to the excellent tips provided already, these are some things I practice for awareness. When you are walking during the day, and you approach some stairs, count the stairs. When you enter a room for the first time, look at the furnishings and close your eyes and visualize the room. When driving on an interstate highway, be aware of the mile markers you see along the roadway, in addition to any obvious landmarks. With practice, you can increase your awareness. It is good that you request lucidity in your dreams before you go to sleep. The courses offered here at Gnosticweb can assist you tremendously.
