Waking up in terror that you have done something horrifically bad

My brother was describing to me several disturbing experiences he has had, and I wonder if anyone can share any light on them or have had similar experiences themselves.

He wakes up in sheer terror with a feeling he has done something unspeakably terrible, only he has no recollection of any dreams or what experience caused this feeling to occur. He says the feeling is so bad that he can hardly put it into words, and he likened it to having the guilt of realising you have tortured and murdered hundreds of small children. He says this is vastly different to waking from a normal nightmare.

He will wake up screaming in a delirious panic and it will actually take him several minutes to come out of it and realise that everything’s okay and he hasn’t done anything wrong. Each time this has happened he has no recollection at all as to what it actually was he thought he had done, and he has been unable to reflect back on it either as to do so brings on the feeling of dread and it is just too painful to stand.

Just to clarify, these have usually occurred in the mornings, and not after eating heavy meals the night before. (Incidentally he already attends the courses)

Anyone experienced anything similar?

Hi Alyssa,

Although it has been quite a while since I have experienced nightmares, some experiences tend to stick.

The type of dreams we have and whether we can remember them or not depend on different things like for example how aware we are during the day and the kind of psychological states we have inside of ourselves.

Minor feelings of fear, irritation or worries which occur during daily live can greatly effect the type of dreams we have.
If we tend to daydream a lot during the day, our dreams usually become more chaotic and we tend to forget them more easily.
Sickness and also the use of alcohol can make dreams more chaotic and weird.

Nightmares can be dramatically reduced if we observe ourselves during the day and remove those inner states like fear, irritations or worries. This is something which cannot be done overnight, but the courses given here give us the right tools to begin with. Good to hear that he is interested in the courses; his own experience will be the most valuable tool for discovering the cause.

KNOW WHAT?

I need to love myself more. Are we our worst enemies? I'm starting to think so.

This is the reason I know I'm too harsh on myself and am working on it. It really is getting better.

Ok....so I'm at work in the dream and make a huge error. Everytime it is 10 times worse then it would have been in real life. Thank goodness I have these dreams less often.

Here's a trick Louise taught me. In the area of self esteem ..... think of a stone and the color of that stone that reminds you of the most wonderful thing you have ever accomplished. Visualize that stone to reproduce that emotion that you felt when you accomplished it. It can really have so very positive result. It has certainly helped me.
