Hello Gnostics!

I'm interested to know how many of you here attend a Christian church while practicing Gnosticism in private?

Personally, I have been Catholic for the past 2 years, but I am now considering Anglicanism (Episcopal Church, USA) instead, because it is much less dogmatic and people are encouraged to work out their own beliefs and their own Path without it being forced on them through church indoctrination.

I am relatively new to Gnosticism, and I'm just now coming to realize that dogmatic religion isn't right for me. But I do like going to church, nonetheless.

Any thoughts? I'd like to hear what other people think about attending Christian churches.

I'M A PRESBYTERIAN ORGANIST

Ok, but it is a liberal church. Everybody in the church knows that I am into metaphysics and such. It is cool there because we strongly believe in religious and philosophical tolerance. I guess I am pretty fortunate.

Haha, that's great! So far the Episcopal churches that I have been to are also pretty liberal and tolerant.

Do you feel like church does anything for you spiritually? Do you find spiritual significance in Scripture or in the life of Christ?

WELL YES

Ok....I do believe my church really is spiritually uplifting. For one thing, it is very non-judgemental. It throws a different perspective on things.

We are far from being fundamentalist, and of course, the church, as a whole, isn't into the things that most of us are here.

But......the people are very open minded and also have really good energy.

WHAT I COULDN'T DO

I could not go back into a fundamentalist, dogmatic church that is fear based and be happy.

I love being out of the box.

Hi Steven,

I was born and raised Catholic but have never really bought into the Catholic faith due to the fact there are too many man made rules in the church. I do attend church on a sunday some times the Catholic church or my local Baptist church. I do find attending church and reading scripture spititualy uplifting as equally I find reading Gnostic scripture spiritually uplifting and more so the practices. I do find the life of Jesus Christ inspiring and at times feel he is with me or God is with me at times so yes I think the official Cannon and Orthodox Christianity and Gnosticism can go hand in hand.

Peace Be With You

True

In fact, the more I am on this website and get a feel of gnosticism, I seem to be realizing that everything does fall into place....It's as if I'm finding the missing link and understanding more of the overall picture.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments!

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I don't check the forums enough when the courses aren't going on.

Yeah I attend my local Catholic Church sometimes and sometimes the Episcopal Church. I also find some aspects of Christianity very uplifting, it's too bad there aren't more specifically Gnostic Christian places around anymore. I need to read more Gnostic scripture, I really like reading the Bible too but sometimes there are things in the Bible that I disagree with.

Hey Steven,

I really like reading The Gospel of Thomas, you can get it on the Books page under The Gnostic Way button in the top bar. The gospel is a number of secret sayings of Jesus. Some of them are quite obscure (for me anyway), but others I can really reach to or understand the deeper meaning within, and I find it very inspiring.

Time for another read soon I think!

Why do you disagree with parts of the bible? I haven't really studied it very much, but I was just wondering..

All the best!

David

Like there are some parts in the New Testament where Paul says that women musn't speak in church, and that they must cover their heads or else have long hair, and stuff like that that I don't think is really important. Why would an omnipotent God care whether women cover their head or how long their hair is? I think that there are some profound underlying truths in the Bible, but at the same time it was written by men and so some rubbish crept into its pages as well.

Fair enough :)

I wouldn't mind learning more about the profound underlying truths. I didn't really pay much attention in Sunday School when I was a kid and now I regret it!

I'm sure I missed out on some good stuff that I might have a better understanding and appreciation of now.

Thanks Steven
