This is why, throughout history, the same negative patterns of conflict and strife have repeated. So long as there is hatred within us, violence will continue. Without addressing the root causes of greed and self-interest, environmental damage will not be stopped. Political solutions can only take us so far – the real answers lie within.

And so a search within is vital for meaningful change in the world.

Even when we consider those who are physically most fortunate, everyone has inner states they would be better off without.

And with or without awareness of the fact, these inner states affect our experience of daily life. Our attention is so easily captured by the search for material gain, better possessions, wealth, prestige, and other measures of physical success that ultimately brings no real peace.

Through joy and sadness, pleasure and pain, there is a sense of fulfillment that for many is lacking – an emptiness that seemingly can’t be filled.

This state of affairs is even more tragic because it so unnecessary. Each person has an enormous potential for spiritual growth. Things don’t need to be this way.
